Set up a mission group

Create a Mission group, brief and organise your teams, set the map and decide who can share objects, then run and close the mission.

21 steps 20 min
Before you start
  • Mission Pro installed
  • A callsign set in Setup (see "Set your identity")

Decide if you need one

Know when Mission mode is the right choice#

Use a Mission group when you direct the people in it: a search, an event, a survey or a convoy. You decide what every map shows, who sees whom and who can add to the map. Members join and find it already set up.

Use Open when friends or colleagues should keep control of their own settings. Use Observe when members should watch the map without being watched until you reveal them.

Tip

If you only need to share positions and chat, Open is quicker. Choose Mission when the operation needs one shared picture that you control.

See what a Mission group controls#

As owner you can:

  • Publish map and tracking settings. Base map, overlays and tracking apply on every member's device.
  • Lock identity fields. Callsign, team, role and symbol become read-only for members.
  • Split people into teams. An admin team sees everyone. Other teams can be limited to their own members and objects.
  • Limit where positions show. The map shows only members inside your activity areas.
  • Share one offline map. Members download your area over Wi-Fi or 5G.
  • Decide who adds to the map. Everyone, admins only, chosen members or chosen teams, with auto-send on or off.
  • Run the mission. Check readiness, record everyone, pause and resume, then replay the mission log.

The rest of this guide sets each one up, in the order most owners need them.

Create and invite

Create the group in Mission mode#

Tap Team, then the menu at the top right, then Add new group. Type a Group name, choose Mission and tap Create. You become the owner.

Tip

You can change the mode later in Group settings, under GROUP RULES, Mode.

Note

Joining a Mission group pauses the member's other groups on that device. Tell members before the operation starts.

Invite your members#

The invite panel opens when the group is created. Share the Invite Code, show a QR code or tap Share invite link. To invite people already on your device, tap Invite peers. The full steps are in "Create a team and invite people".

Note

Anyone with the code can join. Use Delete invite to close it once everyone is in.

Open Group settings#

Open the group menu and choose Group settings. Switch to the Dashboard for a grid of tiles, or stay in the list. Every setting below is in one of them.

Brief and organise

Write the mission brief#

Under GROUP INFORMATION set a Colour, an Icon, a Description and Photos. The description is your mission brief. Members read it in the group's information view.

Tip

The MISSION READY tile counts the brief as done once the description is set.

Put members on teams#

Open the team list, select members and tap Assign teams. Pick a team colour for each group of people. You can also set one member at a time from their row.

Tip

Give everyone a team before the mission. The readiness list shows how many members are still without one.

Choose who sees whom#

Under TEAM VISIBILITY pick an Admin team. Its members see everyone. Turn on Isolated teams so that other teams see only their own members and map objects.

To take one member off the map, open their row and tap Hide on map. Tap again to show them.

Lock identity fields#

Under CONTROLLED FIELDS choose which fields members cannot change: Callsign, Team, Role, Type, Symbol, Display as and Use team colour. Controlled fields are read-only for members. Set each member's values from their row in the team list.

Tip

Lock Callsign when every name on the map must follow your convention.

Set the map and tracking

Publish the base map and overlays#

Under GROUP MAPS set the Base map and Overlays. Switch Use clusters and Cache map tiles on or off. Members get these on joining. To update people already in the group, tap Apply to all members under MAP & TRACKING.

Tip

A member can return to your settings at any time with Reset to group settings.

Set tracking for everyone#

Under TRACKING turn on Background tracking and pick a Preset. Adjust Location Accuracy, Tracking Threshold, Update Interval and Activity type if the mission needs it. These settings reach every member the same way as the map.

Share an offline area#

Draw a polygon or circle on the map first. Then open Offline area in GROUP MAPS and pick it. Members see a prompt with Download and Not now. On Wi-Fi or 5G the download starts by itself. "Work offline" explains the rest.

Draw activity areas#

Draw a polygon or circle, open it and choose Set as activity area. You can also pick shapes under Activity areas in GROUP MAPS. The map then shows only members inside those areas. Members outside stop appearing, which keeps the picture on the operation.

Note

Draw the shape first. Activity areas has nothing to pick until a polygon or circle exists.

Choose how objects are shared

Choose who can share objects#

Open Who can share objects in GROUP MAPS and pick one:

  • Everyone. Every member can add objects to the group.
  • Admins. Only the owner and admins can add objects.
  • Selected members. Only the members you pick. Choose them in the list or from the team list.
  • Selected teams. Any member of a team you pick.

Selected members and selected teams can be used together. A member who matches either can share. You can also tap Share objects on a member's row to let them share or stop them.

Tip

For a tidy shared picture, let only a small group add objects and keep everyone else as viewers.

Turn auto-send on or off#

Auto-send enabled on: new and edited map objects go to the group automatically. Members who can share draw, and everyone sees it.

Auto-send enabled off: nothing goes out by itself. A member draws an object and presses Send when it is ready.

Tip

Leave auto-send on for a live picture. Turn it off when you want to review objects before the group sees them.

Give new members the existing objects#

Turn on Share objects on join in GROUP MAPS. A member who joins gets the group's map objects straight away, so late arrivals see the same map as everyone else.

Fill gaps from a member's row#

If a member is missing objects, open their row and look for Missing with a count. Tap Send missing and out of date to send what they lack.

Run the mission

Check Mission ready#

The MISSION READY tile on the Dashboard is a checklist: Mission brief, Map objects, Assigned members, Activity area, Offline maps and, once you have invited people, Invited members. Open it to see what is done and what is not.

Tip

The tile only reports. Fix an item on its own tile: Group information, Teams or Maps & tracking.

Direct members during the mission#

Open Group actions from the group menu. Use Record everyone to start a recording on every member's device, and Stop recording to end it. You can change a member's tracking settings from their row, and withdraw an object from every member.

The MISSION PROGRESS tile shows how much of a grid your teams have covered, once a grid is set up.

Pause and resume#

Tap Pause mission in Group actions to hold the operation. While it is paused, auto-send holds back what it would send, members' own positions are not sent and recording stops. Tap Resume mission and the held objects go out.

This is different from pausing the group on one device, which only affects that device.

Tip

Only the owner and admins can pause and resume a mission. Pausing and resuming appear in the mission log.

End or hand over the group#

When the mission is over you have three choices in the group menu:

  • Stop group. Every member is removed except you and other admins, and the invite code is deleted. The group stays stopped until you create a new invite code.
  • Archive group. The group is removed from the server and stays on devices marked archived. It stops counting against your plan's group limit. You can unarchive it later.
  • Transfer ownership. Another member becomes owner. You can no longer rename, configure or delete the group, and it still counts towards your plan limit.

To review what happened, open the MISSION LOG tile. "Record and replay a mission" explains how.

Note

Stopping removes your members. Archive instead if you only want the group out of the way.
